Save and restore window arrangements

Save the positions of multiple windows in a snapshot slot and restore available windows later.

Save the current arrangement

  1. Arrange the windows you want to save

Open your working windows and set their positions and sizes.

  2. Assign a shortcut to an empty slot

Open Window Management → Snapshots and assign the empty slot a shortcut. Check its multi-monitor option and the handling of partly covered windows if needed.

  3. Press the shortcut to capture

Press the assigned shortcut, then check that the slot displays the number of saved windows.

Restore a saved arrangement

Use a populated slot’s shortcut. Corral looks for available windows and monitors, restores what it can, and reports the result.

App contents are not saved

A snapshot contains window-placement information. Do not use it as a backup for reopening apps or recovering document contents.

One shortcut, two different actions

Slot statePressing its shortcut
Empty: no saved arrangementCaptures the current eligible windows.
Already contains an arrangementRestores the saved arrangement. It does not overwrite it with the current one.
Before saving a replacement

Resetting the slot removes its saved arrangement. Confirm you no longer need the old arrangement, reset the slot, arrange your windows, and press the shortcut to capture again. Resetting does not recover or delete the contents of your apps’ documents.

Monitor scope and covered windows

The default scope is the monitor containing the focused window. Enable a slot’s multi-monitor option before saving to capture several monitors.

Visibility choiceCapture effect
Skip any partly covered windowExcludes windows even when only partly covered by another window.
Include any partly visible windowIncludes windows with some visible area.

If a window is missing, bring it into view and check the focused monitor and window-placement exclusions. A snapshot cannot be captured when no eligible window remains.

Read the restore result

The result reports Processed, Restored, Already suitable, Skipped, and Failed counts. Some items being processed does not mean all items were restored.

ResultMeaning and next check
RestoredPlacement was applied. Check the resulting position.
Already suitableNo further movement was needed.
SkippedThe item was not applied this time. Check that the window and monitor are available.
FailedAn error occurred. Check permissions and the target window before retrying.

Open the needed windows, leave fullscreen if necessary, and try restoring again.

Edit saved placement

Open a slot’s editor to change the saved window positions and sizes. Editing changes saved snapshot data rather than moving live windows immediately.

Drag saved windows or their edges to move or resize them; overlap is allowed. Use monitor identification to check displays. You can move a saved window to another monitor with the same grid profile, but not to a different grid profile.

At least one window must remain in the editor. Deleting a saved entry does not close the live app window. To empty the entire slot, reset it.

Free allows one snapshot; Pro removes the snapshot count limit. See monitors and grid profiles for display differences.
